Tuesday 6th February marks Safer Internet Day 2018, this awareness day also falls within Children’s Mental Health week 2018 which is an apt opportunity to look at the impact the internet is having on children’s mental health.
It is no surprise, with the increasing amount of time children seem to be spending online, that the internet and particularly cyberbullying can have serious negative effects on a child’s mental health. PAPYRUS reported that “children as young as nine are seeking help with thoughts of suicide, because they are targets of online bullying”. PAPYRUS also stated that 30-40 percent of 11-18 year olds contacting their HOPELineUK helpline team are talking about cyberbullying, with the dominant theme that “there is no escape from it”.
