I have a background in Social Work, Community Work and as a volunteer in a Women's Prison, and work as a Person-Centred Counsellor, a model more easily understood as a 'talking therapy', a method in which clients are able to present what is important to them in a session and the session will be guided by their issues rather than a structure imposed by the counsellor. I have had many years experience in helping clients through complicated bereavements including death by suicide, working with both teenagers and the elderly in this area. As a secondary school counsellor for 3 years I enjoyed working with many young people at important stages in their lives, supporting them through loss, trauma and bereavement. Current experience with a charity CAP, has included trauma work with children of primary school age and their families. Trauma work, which I have been involved in since 2015, provides a more specific approach to resolving difficult issues in the recent and more distant, past, and may include targeted work to resolve certain traumatic memories or incidents. Due to the approach, there will be a certain level of structure involved in the counselling session, but mainly to ensure the client's emotional safety and wellbeing through what can often be a very challenging journey. I have an interest in medically related trauma, for instance fears associated with operations, injury, and issues around life limiting physical conditions such as paralysis, ataxia, and cerebral palsy. Prior to qualifying as a counsellor, I was involved for approximately 10 years in providing loss support associated the trauma of miscarriage and abortion and this remains an area of interest for me.
