It can be really difficult to decide which counsellor to go for when there are so many of us! I hope the following will help you work out if I might be the right one for you, but if it doesn't, please feel free to get in touch and ask me anything that might help you decide.
In addition to being a qualified and accredited counsellor, you might like to know that I'm a mother of two (now adults), I have experienced various highs and lows in life, I think I'm warm, approachable and have a down-to-earth personality. I'm usually quite good at helping people feel at ease. I aim to provide a space where you feel safe, respected and heard. Finding the right "fit" between counsellor and client is important so if you'd like to find out more about how I work please do get in touch. You can also read more below or on my website.
I work with adults of all ages who come with a wide range of difficulties or challenges that they'd like to explore, resolve or feel better about. Due to my rather unique set of qualifications and experience I also specialise in working with issues related to pregnancy, birth and parenthood, whether current or in the past. This might include postnatal depression, fear of birth (tocophobia), problems during pregnancy, difficulties bonding, miscarriage, termination, difficult or traumatic birth experience, struggling with adjusting to life as a parent or grandparent, etc.
I believe counselling should be an holistic process; it's not all about what's going on in your head! You have unique experiences, emotions, responses, stresses, levels of resilience, etc, and all of these impact on your mind, body, feelings and beliefs. Although we'll mostly talk together, sometimes other approaches can be useful. These might include focused breathing, relaxation, using objects or drawing/scribbling - whatever you are comfortable with or that we decide together might be useful in the moment.
Through our working relationship I hope you feel heard, validated and safe. We'll look at areas of your life that are causing you difficulty and sometimes we might link to things in the past that you may or may not have realised were connected to the present. The past shapes the present so sometimes it's useful to look back to learn, understand or accept, but at the same time we will look at what's going on now so that change becomes possible. When you feel ready you can experiment with new responses, new feelings, new perspectives, new skills which gradually lead to therapeutic change.
I have experience working with women and men with a diverse range of issues, so whatever you're struggling with do feel free to get in touch.
There's more about me and how I work on my website.
I work from a dedicated room in my home near Totton, Hampshire. It's easy to find whether you're coming from New Forest, Romsey, Southampton or Winchester as it's just off a main road, and there's ample parking. During the current pandemic I will also consider online working via Zoom.
