My interest in counselling has developed through my working life initially as a Registered Nurse, and then as a Health Visitor. These privileged experiences highlighted the negative impact that less visible emotional and mental health difficulties can have on your general well being. This was the impetus for studying for my Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and as a result, I now work as an Integrative Counsellor accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
The Integrative approach means I may use one or more therapeutic models to offer a flexible, client led approach to therapy. I understand that each individual has differing needs, experiences and expectations of the counselling process and I offer a safe, caring and confidential space where difficulties are heard, acknowledged and treated with respect.
My aim is to develop an authentic, empathetic working relationship in which clients develop an enriched understanding and insight into their difficulties. With this insight the client can develop tools to move forward with increased resilience, self-awareness and autonomy. I encourage clients to reflect on their feelings, challenge negative beliefs and use coping mechanisms to overcome perceived limitations. A better understanding and increased self-awareness for the client lays the foundation for a future based on effecting positive change.
