I trained to be a counsellor because I wanted to help people who were in emotional pain. Not because I thought I could fix them, or solve their problems, but rather so that I could share part of their journey with them, compassionately, giving them a space in which to explore their problems and truths, discover strengths, options and ways forward.
Counselling is not always an easy option; it can be difficult, painful and take a person to unexpected places within themselves. It can also be enlightening, transformative and life affirming.
Each person’s journey through emotional difficulty can be very different. For some it will mean simply occupying the safe space I offer, a confidential space in which they can safely explore their emotions. Others might need to double back to an earlier part of their journey, where I can help them make sense of what happened before, in order to then move forward again. And, for yet others, the need is for the journey forward to be an end in itself, with a companion to help suggest paths, destinations and the tools they might use to move forward successfully.
As well as my private practice work, I work with Cruse Bereavement Care, on all aspects of loss and bereavement, and for The Hummingbird Centre, counselling and supporting those affected by cancer. I am also registered to work for Anxiety UK, and I work for GriefChat (an on-line - keyboard - service).
