Hi, we all need some support sometimes. My name is Rowena. I can't change your world, but I can show you how to interact with it differently. Let me show you strategies to help you manage the anxiety, re-build your self-esteem and find your own way through. The magic for me is being part of your journey as you embrace growth and learn to trust your emotions.

I am qualified to use CBT/REBT integrating other therapies as appropriate. REBT changed my view of CBT. If you want to find out more, read on . . .

So what is REBT?

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy promotes a rational perspective and encourages effective behaviour in response to emotional challenges. Life will throw difficult stuff at us. There are many events we are powerless to avoid. We can't avoid the situations so we try to avoid the emotions that come with them. This is our downfall. Our emotions are our body's way of asking us to listen and respond. Avoidance is not an appropriate response. It stores up trouble. REBT helps us to tolerate the difficult stuff and take appropriate action so we don't make difficult situations more difficult and painful than they need to be.

My focus has been on developing self-esteem and managing the emotions that low self-esteem provokes. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) encourages us to challenge our thoughts and change our behaviours to help us view our experience more positively . REBT showed me how to use a CBT framework to challenge the beliefs underpinning my thoughts. REBT gave me the tools to dispute these beliefs to show me the impact they were having was not the one I intended. Rigid views are part of the problem, flexibility underpins the solution. REBT provides an understanding of healthy emotions as well as unhealthy emotions. This is what I needed to see a way forward, to be able to make effective changes.

CBT/REBT promotes emotional responsibility. It can be surprising how easily we lose responsibility for our own emotions when we are focused on other people.

REBT focuses on our perception of events, our beliefs about an event rather than the event itself because it is our interpretation we are disturbed by rather than the event itself. If we are continually disturbed by everyday situations, it may well be we are holding onto beliefs that aren't helping us. Although I have been interested in its application to anxiety and low self-esteem, the flexibility of CBT/REBT means it can be applied to a variety of issues/diagnoses.

REBT is not intended to be long-term therapy. My role is to guide you through the REBT process, to teach you skills to be able to become your own therapist.

I have had a varied career journey that has led me to finding answers for myself to life’s challenges and providing therapy to support others to do the same. I am currently a Senior Wellbeing Advisor with Solent Mind and have been working at Fareham & Gosport Wellbeing Service since 2013. I carried out my placement work within the Solent NHS Talking Change service in Portsmouth.

I love sharing these skills with others. Moving to a different area has prompted me to continue this independently.

I hold a current Enhanced DBS and am registered on the Update Service.
