For many of us the thought of engaging in therapy to address the difficulties we are facing can seem frightening and very much out of our comfort zone. The vast array of different talking therapies available can be confusing and you may find yourself wondering where to begin. Finding a therapist that feels an appropriate match for your needs is the first step. Making an informed choice with how you wish to address the challenges you are currently experiencing is key to the success of your therapeutic progress. I hope the information I have included here is helpful in deciding whether my values and approach feels a good fit for you.
How I Work
With integrative training and experience in the main evidence-based psychotherapies, I work flexibly and collaboratively, tailoring modalities and techniques to the needs of each person I see. Everyone is unique, there is no one like you in the universe and what a miracle that is! To honour both of our individualities, I combine psychodynamic, humanistic and behavioural interventions with a strong relational approach. I feel there is a truly transformational power in a deeply honest and trusting connection. Many of us come to therapy because we feel lost, overwhelmed with life and unable to make sense of how we feel. Every emotion that we experience has a purpose. Fear is our intuition, sadness if often urging us to let go whilst anger seeks to protect. Together, we will work to connect to your emotions, to listen to their language and to honour your feelings. Gaining greater emotional intelligence along the way and feeling confident to make authentic life decisions that work for you.
I believe strongly that we aren't built to navigate the messiness and intensity of life alone. Humans are relational beings, we need others, especially when we are hurting or finding day to day life a struggle. With this in mind, I feel my role is to create a safe, empathic, non-judgemental and progress focussed space for you to heal in togetherness. To support you in utilising the inner resources you already possess, to challenge limiting core beliefs and to build self-esteem and value during our time together.
As well as working with a variety of presenting issues, I have extensive experience and specialist training in working with trauma, vicarious trauma, PTSD, compassion fatigue, burnout, chronic stress, grief, depression and anxiety due to my current work as a Counselling and Wellbeing Service Lead within the NHS, counselling key workers and staff through this incredibly difficult and frightening pandemic.
When working with people who are suffering from a history of trauma or indeed, experiencing it daily, I use a variety of interventions underpinned by a polyvagal framework to create safety and stabilisation for the nervous system that is anxious and depleted. Polyvagal theory originates from scientific research into neuroscience and our nervous systems' involuntary response to what we perceive as a threat. When we have experienced trauma or feel consistently overstretched, our nervous system can become confused, causing us to live in a permanent state of hypervigilance and stress or withdrawal and shutdown. I work with your unique triggers so you can feel confident, in control and emotionally responsive rather than reactive to challenges. I am also trained to deliver the Rewind Therapy Technique which is a short course of treatment, to alleviate the symptoms of PTSD.
I have a rich history of working predominantly with women, who have experienced childhood or adult emotional, verbal or sexual abuse. Supporting them to build a healthy relationship with themselves, to come out from the shadows of self-sacrifice, chronic shame and self-criticism to reach a space of deeply loving self-acceptance and autonomy.
I also have previous training and experience with autism, ADHD and neurodivergence in the therapeutic space and am ADOS (autism diagnostic assessment) trained from a wonderfully rewarding past career working in the area of speech and language.
