Information for members

As of the 15th of May 2023, we have officially changed our name to the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).

Our new and improved website is coming soon!

The Diploma in E-Counselling Theory & Practice (DEtP) has two parts, which must be completed in sequence. It considers how to build a therapeutic online relationship that is both ethical and confidential.

The Course is based on an experiential learning approach in an online group. Course members work together, supported by an On-Line Training for Counsellors Ltd. (OLT) course tutor, to research aspects of providing an ethical online counselling service using synchronous and asynchronous online discussions. The focus of the course is working with text based online counselling although other forms such as using webcams and avatars will be considered. Therefore, you will

need to work with clients using text (either emails or Instant Messaging) for at least 75% of your sessions).

Students also work therapeutically with individual clients, providing online counselling both synchronously and asynchronously and receive online supervision from a supervisor who is online trained.

In addition, students provide evidence of at least 10 hours of personal online therapy, which has been taken with an OLT approved online counsellor(s).

The diploma requires approximately 16 hours each week. This is divided between individual and group discussion meetings, client contact, individual and group supervision, asynchronous discussion by email and message board and personal development (therapy) as well as background reading.

Over the course of the diploma, there are up to 20 facilitated synchronous group discussions (90 minutes each); 3 individual tutorial meetings (30 mins); 10 hours of personal therapy; five group supervision meetings (90 mins) an average of 20 client hours (either live session or email). In addition, there are ongoing email and noticeboard discussions, background reading, research and private study.

The diploma comprises 200 Study hours, made up of 90 Guided Learning Hours and 110 Private Study Hours.
