How can counselling help?
We live in a society that is increasingly busy, at times stressful and anxiety inducing. Whilst we are no longer being chased by a sabre tooth tiger, our brains often perceive modern day stresses in the same way and respond to the threat, leading to symptoms of anxiety.
I became a therapist and I am very passionate about working with clients to increase understanding and manage symptoms of anxiety and depression. In addition, finding ways to take care of yourself, increase your self-esteem and in doing so build personal resilience enabling you to live your best life and the best version of you.
Initial introductions and the space for you to tell your story are an opportunity for you to begin to experience the essence of the therapeutic relationship and how therapy can help you to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours in a safe and supportive environment.
What to expect in your first session?
Our first session together aims to provide you with a warm welcome into the therapy space that we will share together. We will exchange basic introductions and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your expectations of therapy and start to explore your therapy goals in a supportive environment. This will be at a pace led by you, for you. I will discuss with you the ethical basis and safeguarding framework that envelops our work together.
I am able to offer face to face therapy, outdoor therapy and also via Zoom or telephone.
I have a background as a Registered General Nurse and during my nursing career, I spent many years working within Oncology and caring for patients and their families coming to terms with a cancer diagnosis and managing loss and grief. This experience helped me to develop my understanding of how impactful a physical diagnosis is and the psychological scars that are left behind, but unseen.
For some of my career, I worked as a Lead Dementia Nurse. The impact of this disease on the brain is devastating for both the patient and loved ones around them. This illness is often greatly misunderstood, as is the impact of the diagnosis upon the individual and their loved ones.
Many people are touched by ill health and this impacts not only physically but can also affect us emotionally and impact negatively on our mental health. With my knowledge and experiences, I feel that I am able to offer psychological support and understanding of managing these emotions and a space to explore these together.
My theoretical Psychotherapeutic frame and emphasis is both Integrative therapy and Transactional Analysis. I find using different models of therapy offers options that best fit the needs of the client. I work with both long and short-term contracts.
